One Suspect Arrested In The Shooting of Officer Landers Burton
Officer Landers Burton, 32, was shot Monday during an armed robbery in Stone Mountain.
DeKalb County Police Department, DeKalb County Police Department Officer Landers Burton, 32, was shot Monday during an armed robbery in Stone Mountain.
Officer Landers Burton, 32, was shot in the buttocks shortly before midnight Monday at the Landmark at Mountain View complex on Green Bark Circle West, according to DeKalb police Lt. L.A. Ruffin.
The suspect in custody is a 21-year-old man who was earlier identified as a person of interest, DeKalb police spokesman Mekka Parish said. His name and photo are not being released by authorities until additional eyewitness lineups are finished, Parish said. He faces charges of armed robbery and aggravated assault against a police officer.
Ruffin described the incident as an "armed robbery that elevated to a shooting when the victim tried to defend himself."
He said police were looking for two men who fled in a dark-colored vehicle, possibly a Toyota Camry, after stealing the officer's wallet.
The second suspect has not been identified, and the investigation is continuing.
Burton, who has been with the department for three years, was taken to Atlanta Medical Center, where he underwent surgery early Tuesday. He was in critical but stable condition.

Excellent job Major Felony Detectives for getting the bad guy! You guys are awesome!
What happened to all the other comments?
officer burton, get well soon. thoughts and prayers are with you and the family. he was in our DUI class this week and its so quick how things happen so suddenly. I'm so surprised other officer posts are NOWHERE TO BE SEEN except 2 ! Come on DKPD where is the love, this is one of our own and there should be tons of comments on here. if there was something negative people would be jumping at the bit to make a comment. this is so terrible !
To Officer Burton and his family: I am just another citizen in DeKalb but one who formerly worked for our public safety dept., still have friends in the dept., and believe there are none finer anywhere in this country than our officers. We are so lucky that your injuries were no worse or at worse, that everyone would be wearing that "black" tape over their badges and calling out our honor guard. Thanks to our great felony detectives for working so furiously to apprehend this deadly, dangerous piece of dirt! It is just a matter of time before you get the 2nd perp...that's because you ARE the best! Stay safe...a caring friend.
Get well soon my brother!!!
Get well soon buddy, we are praying for you brother!!
Dear Officer Burton,
Please have a speedy recovery and may our awesome loving God above stretch out his healing hands over you. Be blessed and I hope to be part of the DKPD during its upcoming academy ( when ever that may be ).
Your Christian brother
Burton, I am praying for you.
To my brother in law enforcement, may GOD put a speedy recovery in your wish box;from your Stone Mtn PD sister.
Everyone pray for Burton's speedy recovery but also send prayers for North Precinct Officer Trammell who was involved in a serious 41I over the weekend. He is in very bad shape.
I am a former officer who just left the dept and wanted to say I hope officer Burton has a speedy recovery and everyone pray for officer Trammel he is still in critical shape.
Anon 3:06, can you give some more details? What happened? How is the officer doing? On or off duty? What kind of help, if any, does the officer need?
Officer Trammell went off the road on the way home from work. It took almost three hours to extricate him from his vehicle and he had to be life-flighted to Grady, but he is going to be okay. He had a lot of broken bones, requiring a couple surgeries. He is a young officer, so undoubtably he will need a donation of leave, at some point.
Keep him in your prayers. And those of you who work odd shifts and have a long ride home- - be careful. Find a fellow officer you can stay with if you're tired.
