Maybe someone can explain this to me please. As a citizen, if someone steals a car and runs from police, they deserve to be shot if that what it takes to stop them. Why are the officers on "administrative leave"?
Good job South MW

We can not shoot someone just because they run, they have to present a danger to the public or make a action that would make the officer believe he is about to commit bodily harm to someone. Example: reaching for a weapon. Admin leave is to allow I.A. to investigate the incident and the officer may need that time, usually 3 days to seek help if needed. It sounds bad on the news report, but it is standard around the country.

The officers are on administrative leave while the departmental inquiry is done. This covers the officer(s) requalifying with their duty weapon, Internal Affairs completing their investigation and other policy-required tasks.
Stealing the car and running from the police doesn't cause you to get shot...turning and pointing/firing a gun at us does. It ain't that hard to figure out.
If they had only written more tickets...
Yarboro, needs to practice his public speaking. He sounded like he's never held a conversation before: uhhh, uhhh, uhhh.....Smh
Thank you very much for the explanations. It seems to me that it would be unusual for someone bold enough to commit a carjacking not to be armed. And if someone tried to carjack ME, I would WANT you to shoot at them if they run. Criminals must know that if they run, the charges stack up, so they must be hiding something more - a weapon, a warrant, or not wanting a longer sentence because of their rap sheet. By shooting him in the leg, they weren't trying to kill him, just stop him the way I see it. Aah, but then again I am not in charge, and that is a good thing, no doubt about it. So, good job guys.
Bookem Danno !!
Thankfully the officers came out ok. That article was one of the most poorly written I've ever read.

The shitbag pointed and unloaded a .38 revolver at the officers before they shot and killed him...did your precious news mwdia mention that?
Anon 10:50
More like "Tag'em Danno".
Be Safe!
Unloaded? I'm surprised the family hasn't been on the news crying and complaining that the officer should have known the gun was not loaded, and that we need better training, and they want justice for their innocent dead thug.

DO YOU REALLY THINK A FLEEING FELON IN A VEHICLE IS NOT A DANGER
TO PUBLIC THEN YOU NEED TO BE IN VEHICLE HIT BY FLEEING PERP THAT
HAS NO CARE FOR ANYONE INCLUDING HIMSELF === HE'S LOW-LIFE SOMETHING
FOR NOTHING TRYING TO BEAT SYSTEM OR TAKE WHATEVER HE CAN FOR NOTHING === I SAY PAYMENT IN FULL
The news media fails to report this scum bag sprayed bullets at the officers in attempt to murder as many of them as he could. Your liberal news media fails to mention this.
6:28 - are you saying that you think I object to how the scenario played out based on officers actions?? If so, I regret that I expressed myself so badly that you somehow construed that I do not fully support the officers. My point was that they did what they had to do to get a pathetic waste of a human being off the street, and protect themselves. "Admin leave" sounds like some sort of punitive action, and to me it seemed unwarranted.
Better?
This incident occurred the way it should have. The officers did everything right. Now lets see how bad the county can screw it up. I wouldn't be surprised if Robert James comes to the conclusion that the officers did something wrong and tries to hang them for it. Where is Ellis in a news conference saying how good his police officers and department are? You know he has to get his face time in every time something bad happens.
I just want to tell not only the officers involved, but all officers of DKPD how I appreciate the great job they are doing every single day and night. You never know what is going to happen when you come in and start your tour of duty. The #1 goal is to go home safely at the end of your watch.
It was great police work that brought this incident to an end and justice was served. For the citizens that don't know, the victim of the car jacking had their vehicle taken from them at gun point. It wasn't just a CAR THEFT (like someone put it in their blog), the suspect pointed a loaded weapon in the face of the victim and threatened to kill them. That alone is a scary and traumatic incident. For the citizens that don't know, it happens on a daily basis in DeKalb County. The officers that responded did a great job at giving out a good description and lookout of the victim's vehicle.
Great job on the morning watch officer who wasn't too busy handling call to call on a Friday night and was able to hear the lookout and actually do good policing and find the vehicle. Good job on the radio for giving out good traffic over the radio.
Then the perp decides to go down a dead end street and bail. Great job on the officers for giving chase. Then the perp decides to shoot every last bullet from his gun (which he used to stick in the victim's face at the initial car jacking), to shoot at the officers who were pursuing him. Great job on the officers dodging the many bullets from the perps gun that were intended to kill the officers. (Why else would anyone in their right mind shoot at the police without the intention of killing them) Great job on the officers for realizing the threat and eliminating it.
Now society and DeKalb County as a whole is a much safer place. How many other car jackings or armed robberies has this perp committed before he was caught? I will bet at least 10-20.
@6:28....no need to yell.....I'm partial to the old saying... rookies should be seen, not heard....DKPD wins more of these confrontations than the public really knows...so the public knows that all thoses ranting and raving about DKPD being a has been department, etc .... the over whelming majority of us are still dedicated to doing the job
"The news media fails to report this scum bag sprayed bullets at the officers in attempt to murder as many of them as he could. Your liberal news media fails to mention this."
The News Media can only decide whether to report or not if it's told in the beginning. As a reporter in this town, I can tell you Dekalb County has become the hardest place to get information from in all Metro Atlanta.
Just way to easy to blame the media I guess. Read the report: As officers gave chase, shooting began, said police, who could not confirm whether the suspect fired shots."
Give more information and maybe it would be included in reports!
@6:12 If an officer did give you more information, only two things would happen. You would put your own little twist on the story to make it more sensational (usually at the officers detriment in criminal and civil suits to follow) and the county would probably fire the officer for violating county policy.
To the reporter: I am not a police officer. I watch the news every day and it is so blatantly clear that the media is anti-police. When the police are forced to kill a suspect, the news put the "perps" family on telling what a good person he was. Forget the fact that he shot, robbed, raped or whatever the crime was. You put his family on telling that the police "didn't have to do it". The county gives the information they want, not the individual police officer. Believe me, in Dekalb, the officers have to watch their backs from the thugs committing the crimes AND the people who run this county. The county doesn't look out for these officers and neither do you running slanted reports making their jobs more dangerous.
Case and point- just the other day the AJC had a headline that read' "man hel for four years without trial." To me, that soynds like the story is goingbto be about how unfair it was for our judicial to hold a suspect without a trial. But if you actually read the article, you would have been able to figure out that the trial has been repeatedly delayed by the defense. I said you could figure it out because thr biased author never puts the blame on the defense. The closest he ever came to doing that was mentioning that the defense wants a new judge, which will delay the trial more and that the victims' families said they arentired of th delays. An unbiased, responsible journalist would have listed all of the delays and who was responsible for them. But no, this poor, poor molester has been held for four years without a trial. Whaaaaa!!!
