AJC story here.

My guess is that the Department allowed him to resign so there was no chance of a lawsuit. What cowards! All they had to do was fire him. They had more than enough to forstall any legal action. What message does this send?? Oh, I forgot. We are led by moral cowards. My bad.

A small pension is better than no pension at all. Besides that, now that will not be a distraction as it has been for awhile. No moregray clouds hanging over the department.

Time to move on folks........

A small pension?? For criminal behavior that will most likely lead to a conviction?? Are you freaking serious??? The Department should've fired his a** instead of rewarding him, which is what they did, with a "small pension". What an embarassment.

Sorry boys and girls but if you walk in and say "I quit". The department can't say "no you can't cause we are going to fire you". He's gone and that's that. Move on and find another officer or supervisor to direct your attention to and keep your eye off the real issues like our salary, pension, unsafe vehicles, insurance.

OT, but you might find this interesting.
I doubt many of you know this, but I am a shooter.
I shoot recreationally. I am not a hunter, I find it more efficient to purchase meat at the store.
Target guns of choice, Ruger 10/22 carbine and .22 Browning Buckmark target pistol. Both setup with reflex sights. I can shoot better at sixty yards with my target pistol than most can shoot with a rifle at twenty yards. I have never ever met anyone who can match me with my .22 carbine. I scare myself sometimes.
That said, I ran into an interesting problem a couple of weeks ago, Charlie Elliot wildlife center is opening a new state of the art skeet range next week. $ 6.50 for 25 clays, I think its a fairly good price. I started researching skeet shooting and its an exciting sport. While I can nail static targets dead I have never engaged moving targets. My brother in law graciously allowed me to borrow his 20 gauge pump with the option to buy, unfortunately range testing was disappointing.
This is where the story gets interesting and might pertain to you as cops that use 12 gauge riot guns. I am not a big guy, I weigh 130 pounds with a small body frame. I have damaged both my shoulders with dumb skiing accidents.
With the range test I found the recoil of a 20 gauge is not much less than a 12 gauge. To put it bluntly a 12 gauge kicks my ass, I have learned to deal with it but never liked it. The 20 gauge was not much better. One thing I have learned about shooting is if you are scared of the recoil you will never become a really effective shooter of the weapon. I did the research. This is the solution I found.
The Remington “super-cell(TM)” butt-pad. I have seen and used energy-absorbing butt-pads on other shot-guns. I have found them ineffective. This one is different, it fracken works. Apparent recoil was reduced by what felt like about 50 percent. Amazing! Looking at the physics of the product, my best guess is that this pad temporarily absorbs the initial high recoil energy and releases it over several milliseconds, instead of getting one big jolt in a millisecond.
I know more and more females are hiring on as police officers and as politically incorrect it is to admit it, there are physiological differences between males and females including weight and size of frame. There is just no way that a lighter weight individual is going to absorb heavy recoil energy as easily as a heavier individual.
I suggest that DKPD officers and range staff take a serious look at this product for use by lighter officers.

Be safe out there guys and gals!

Ken, please start a blog and call it "Totally Irrelevant Musings by KenC" and post that there. Understand that this blog is totally designed to point fingers at each other and call each other racists, etc. That's what brings joy to the hearts of those who can't see we are being taken advantage of by the BOC/CEO with our costs going up coupled with the salaries going down.

Actually, I think that the Chief issued a directive saying that it is HIS option to let you resign instead of being fired if you are under disciplinary investigation.

I think the county can fire you retroactively.

Sorry, you are wrong. Believe it or not, even the chief can't say...no, you can't resign because I fire you. The chief can issue whatever directive he wants, but if you say "I quit" he can't undo it.

Ok try not to be so stupid, resign no chance of appeal. Get fired and just let one date, one period be out of place and you now have an error in fact, which means what? Job back. The Departmet is doing thing right on issues like this, not like back in the old days when Captain Taylor lost almost every case he handled.
