Troubled DeKalb Officers

Jodie,
Why didnt you ask the chief his thoughts about the CEO investigation?

Anonymous said...

Did you see the Training Day movie poster in the chief's office? Guess that's how Cedric gets down....King Kong ain't got nothing on him! Rock on Chief A.

Anonymous said...

Well it's obvious your department has grossly incompetent supervision/supervisors.

Anonymous said...

How the hell is the new chief on a news segment talking about officers being arrested, and he has a poster of the movie Training Day in his office? A movie that glorifies and showcases violence and various forms of criminal activity within a police department (Aside from Hoyt finally standing up and doing the right thing)?

Anonymous said...

You get what you pay for!, But listen dont stop with the lower rank and file Jody, look into the powers that be of Dale Holmes, and Wiz now there is a cover up.

Tired the crap and looking said...

And the good officers are leaving and/or retiring early in droves. The garbage stays because their records are not clean and they can't leave the safety of their protector......

WHAT is DeKalb doing to keep the good officers and supervisors?... F'ing with them and letting their take home pay dwindle is certainly not working.

Anonymous said...

Jody that was a very poor story you get a C-. When certain people don't get there way they call second hand reporters like you.

Anonymous said...

The fact that the majority of those officers had multiple disciplinary actions prior to their big step into the doo-doo is upsetting. WTF? And why does it take 3+ months for just a written counseling to come back from on high? Is it even effective after all that time? Chief A, please streamline the process. Side note-Really? All over the man because he has a Training day poster in his office? At least he advertises what kind of movies he likes, which makes him relatable- a lot of officers loved that movie. What posters did OB have in his office? Probably none to go with his blah personality...couldn't decide on which poster to put up..just like he couldn't decide to fire Crumpton after he was recommended for termination by the most carefree Major we had, Higgy Baby. At least Chief A can make a decision. Just sayin.

Anonymous said...

Wow,
Look at the IA disciplinary list on AJC,com. I counted 5 supervisors with a sustained 'untruthfulness' in their files. Good ammo to use at your appeals hearing if they ever write you up.

Jody,
Did you bother to look into the officers opinion? More over, why are you listing the names of officers that are no where near criminals? How are you just judging by records? Did you bother to look into the accomplishment and reputation within the community for each officer listed? I must say its unfair to classify officers as "bad" just by looking at past cases. Did you bother to read how each case was resolved? You must also be ignorant to the frustration built in each officer's family as to how you have classified each officer listed. To make my point, I really find it unfair for you to list officers names and give them a bad reputation before actually knowing the experience or the real reputation they have within the community they work in. Most of those officers listed, work hard and risk their lives everyday. Something you're not or anybody is really capable of. Not to forget that their salary is not even near what they should be getting paid. I am disappointed and my respect for you has dropped and even for channel 2 news. An apology is deserved to those officers whose name shouldn't even be put on that list.

Anonymous said...

@May 18, 2013 at 12:48 AM....I'll give the otherside of the coin...except for the 2 idiots picked up by the feds, ALL the other cases were initiated, investigated, if warranted arrested, perp walked and referred for prosecution by DKPD. Seems Jodie forgot to mention that angle. We have done the ugly work necessary within the low level ranks but some real problems lie in the upper ranks and only 1 has ever been removed (for releasing info to WSB TV oddly enough). Ever wonder where all the fired/resigned/quit DKPD officers go??. Take a good look at all these little departments. WSB/AJC rehashed old stories and felled to mention that all but 1 officers featured has been fired.

Anonymous said...

I certainly do not know about all of the officers on the,"List" that was scrolled across the screen. But I saw a couple of names that I know for a damn fact have not been in trouble. Horrible journalism! Those officers should not be demanding an apology. They should be talking to an attorney.

Anonymous said...

Could you share that list here? Most people don't have an ajc.com subscription. That is public information, so ajc can't complain about it being shared here.

A resident quoted in that article said the police in Seattle, where she used to live, were more professional than most of us. The starting pay for a Seattle Police Officer is $64,000 a year. I've been working for Dekalb for almost 15 years and I don't make close to that. If our raises had not been taken away I might be making that, but Seattle starts their officers off that high. Do you think that might have something to do with the quality of applicants each department attracts and retains?

If you want better officers, pay for better officers.

Anonymous said...

Wgaf what movie poster was behind the Chief! I liked the movie "Heat", so does that mean I condone armed robbery? Not!
All of our officer problems were in place before Chief Alexander arrived here. But, some posts on here want to trash him for not fixing the problem overnight. Kind of reminds me of all the 87s I go on each day. The parties involved act as though I'm there to wave a magic wand over them and make all their domestic issues disappear for good.
A good start to address this issue would be to do a thorough review of our background investigation processes and determine where we need to improve. Also, do away with the worthless voice stress test and go back to the polygraph. Use the polygraph for the hiring process and internal investigations.
To anon 1:20, are you saying that in the event you decide to lie in an internal investigation, you are going to quote the list as a reason why? I call bullshit on that! You need to have integrity to admit when you're wrong, take your lumps and move on.

It's Sweeps ya know... Gotta get those ratings and viewership up so than can charge more to the advertisers. What better way than a juicy scandal of crooked cops?

Don't read much into this already public-knowledge story. Love ya Jodie, but really... You could have done a lot better for Sweeps if you had taken another angle. Just ask some of your contacts what's really going on besides this stuff. Like a previous poster said, look a lot higher than these line level officers and Supervisors. Go after the other story that's just dying to be told.

This is a lazy, low brow, hit and run journalism. Instead of doing real investigative work, Jodi Fleischer and the AJC picked the low hanging fruit. They chose the quick and easy way to do a take down piece on our department.

This article does nothing but state the obvious and bash our officers. Do we have problems? Yes, we absolutely do. Jodi Fleischer and the AJC seem to think they're bringing something unknown to light. Better reporters than those tied to these reports wouldn't have just settled for reporting the obvious: the department has problems. Better reporters would have investigated WHY we have problems. Better reporters would have asked to see the applicant pool our Background and Recruiting staff has to choose from. After seeing what kind of garbage we have applying for a job with our department, a good reporter would have next asked, "Why are there so few good people applying to work for DeKalb?" After analyzing why we can't attract the best people, a good reporter would have looked into all of the Officers who have left the department for better offers elsewhere. A good reporter would ask why DeKalb is having such a tough time retaining good officers.

Instead of doing all of these things that a good reporter would do, all WSB and the AJC did was make it look like a few bad apples are representative of the whole department. Day in and day out I hear, "Innocent until proven guilty" when it comes to dealing with perps. But when it comes to Officers, we're guilty, period. Look at how they presented the information about IA investigations. They said over 200 Officers have been accused of breaking the rules and investigated by IA in the last 5 years. Guilty until proven...nevermind...we're just guilty. They didn't bother to mention how many of those investigations revealed the Officers did nothing wrong. If you went to IA, Fleisher and the AJC assume you must have done something wrong. They didn't even consider the possibility that perps just complain on us to make life miserable for us.

WSB, AJC, this reporting sucks. You should be ashamed of your bias against us and your laziness for not doing an accurate, thorough investigation. You're no Woodward and Bernstein, that's for sure. Maybe you're content with just pointing out the obvious: we have problems in our department. You seem to think the problem is we're not doing enough to find the problems. I'd rather find the cause of the problems. Dealing with problems is reactive. Identifying the cause of the problem is proactive. I'd rather take a proactive approach and prevent the problem in the first place, rather than try to fix it later. I guess that would have take too much time and effort though for these pathetic reporters to do though.

----Fed Up DKPD

There are bad apples everywhere. $hit I got bad apples in my refrig. I'm proud of the good officers we have in Dekalb County, well not proud just somewhat proud. If you have poor leadership, it will trickle down to the officers. Why do people vote for these a-holes and then complain?

Anonymous said...

Anon 1205,
I think the earlier post was saying that if you go to your appeal's hearing and bring up the fact that the supervisor who wrote you up has a history of being untruthful then you have a good chance of discrediting that supervisor's testimony against you. Defense attorneys are using this tactic against officers all the time now in court. This is why some departments are simply terminating any officer who has a sustained untruthfulness charge.

Anonymous said...

I can tell you I dont give a rat ass about The Dekalb County Police Department or the new chief or the AJC.. Someone told me a few years ago if I did not like it here in Dekalb, to leave and believe me I left. It has only gotten worst and will never and I repeat will never get better. There will be 30 cities before long and no Dekalb County left . What pisses me off, as it probably did many other officers, is my name appeared on the I.A.investigations that were listed by the A.J.C. I was cleared on all charges and there was no merit to what was accursed. The person that complained on me was upset about an arrest, who was later convicted. I was never sued and or ended up in the Federal Building in Atlanta. You know the one building Im talking about....Russell B with the story I am drug dealer and the police violated my rights as I violated the law so now I will sue you. Well that never happened again proving no merit to the complaint that had been filed. What Jodi, who Cant Understand Normal Thinkking doesn't understand is that reguardless if the complaint was valid or not when filed, an investigation would be conducted. But to the uneducated people that read the A.J.C. A.K.A. liberals and democats and I said democats, it apprears to them that Dekalb officers are off the chain and that over 200 officers have committed some type of crime when that is not the case....Its a handfull of really bad officer and they should be executed for doing what they did.I feel the same way about news reporters who lie and feel they are covered by using the word alledged when they know they are lying. Jodi get what I mean??? Thats all I want to say... Man I'm happy I'm gone and truly sorry for the ones still there that cant leave just yet....The ones that cant leave youve only got a few years left and then the prison sentence will be over with about 60 grand a year coming your way for life... Its has been awhile but I am and always will be "M Gone and Happy".

Anonymous said...

How many suspension hours does it take to get fired? I think that was the point. You want to know where your raises went? It's going out to the criminals whom's rights were violated to pay those law suits off. More to come!!

Anonymous said...

To WSB and the AJC:
I am furious over this report. I am not a police officer, I am the wife of a police officer. This article is slanderous at best. This report was published without details into what was found and who filed the report. My husband's name is on this list and the one unfounded complaint he had. Yet, you make him look like a bad cop. I'd love to sit with you and discuss his career (although I know you don't want the good, only the bad). I will show you several commendations from the Department and other outside agencies. I will show you he's a good cop and a good person. But I know you don't care how you make people look as long as the police look bad. You are pathetic in your attempt to discredit good cops. Yes there are bad cops, but that's true in any profession including yours.

re; anom-4:33. Super great comment!!(probably the best that has ever been posted). Maybe we should all rent some bulldozer's, demolish the county building, every precinct in the whole county, erect one huge circus tent, run all these sorry "sum-bitches" off,and start all over again. The news-media's constant slamming of the police will never end.(look at how much damage these friking embedded "dove" reporter's have done to the military)! They never have reported, and never will report the good/positive things that you officer's,or soldier's do,every single day,in this county,or in the war. That doesn't make good print, though! Any, police officer doing his/her job, will be "complained" on, occasionally. Officer's working these "hot" territories will get complained on a lot more, not because of misconduct, but because of the necessity of being "forced" into having to use higher levels of force,a lot more. No officer intentionally does things that will get him/her complained on. There is,and will alway's be,"a time to talk, and a time to fight"!! THAT DOESN'T/SHOULDN'T, AUTOMATICALLY CATERGORIZE THEM AS A THUG WITH A BADGE,as is portrayed by the media,or the critical public.(there is a big difference b/t working a beat "in" Emory and a beat "on" Memorial Dr.,and they are only 5+ miles apart)! I would much rather work around an officer who is not afraid to do what is neccessary, than one of these "timid/apologetic" police "poser's",that are either afraid to make a decision,or are incapable of making a decision!(I blame every single bit of that on the constant bombarding of "liability, don't forget liability",they get in training, and from some of these weak-knee'd supervisor's)! The criminal element has gotten much bolder, and more violent,,but the police administrator's expect you to be a "kinder/gentler--officer friendly",type of officer. Of course, there are numerous situation's where this applies, but obviously not in every situation. THERE JUST "AIN'T NO" NICE WAY TO USE FORCE!!(I don't care how many warm, fuzzy, touchy, feely computer classes they teach,or send you to). I never talked to the son of a bitches from the news media, because, more times than not, they will twist what you say,(especially under the stress of the call). As a matter of fact,I got kicked out of a supervisor's class once, because during the "Dealing with the news media section",a guest "idiot reporter" was lecturing about what a good working relationship we all share, b/t the "job",and the news-media. I told him our relationship was purely adverserial at best, and that if any officer believed any different from that,he/she was a fool, and if he really believed that,"he was full of sh*t"!!(major, mega, marathon, record breaking, ass chewing for that one, back at old 34)! YOU GUY'S ARE DOING AN UNBELIEVEABLY,INCREDIBLE JOB,IN THE ABSOLUTE WORST CONDITION"S AND ENVIRONMENT,and,if I was your "boss",I would tell you that at every roll call.(I alway's have, and alway's will be,more concerned about the officer on the scene, than all the g.d. perp's in the world)! The ignorant public and the news-media has obviously been watching way "too much" Andy of Mayberry episodes. If they don't believe that,I suggest they haul their dumb- asses up to the police memorial in D.C., and take a look. Just like the military, the police are considered to be an "evil necessity". Like the old, bad ass Josey Wales say's "to hell with them fellar's". WISH I WAS STILL THERE TO STAND UP FOR ALL YALL ! Who loves you, man!!!!!

Wow, this is pathetic!!!! I worked IA at DKPD as a supervisor in the 80's....and we had a Total of 4-5 officers who collected all the complaints, and that was it! We were pretty darned good in those days! I have to admit, I'm appalled! Anyone with these kind of disciplinary records would have been LONG GONE in my day!

Excellent post 4:33. There is so little good journalism any more. That formerly noble profession has been reduced to a contest to see who can draw the most attention from their sensationalism. The more shit you stir up, the more hits to your site which in turn impacts advertising dollars. It's sick, negative, non-productive, but most of all, I worry about how you're portrayed and the impact it has on you as you're out there dealing with the riff-raff.
Those tabloid panderers should think that through the next time they authorize articles like that.

Any officer who has never been complained on is not doing his job. Real police work requires aggressiveness. "You have to break a few eggs to make real mayonaise s my philosophy. The officers who had unfounded or not sustained complaints should not have had their names made public. Unfounded or not sustained meanns THEY DIDN"T DO IT !!!!! Police officers get complained on for doing their jobs becaus the thugs know the liberal dumbasses will give them sympathy. Do you GD people want real police officers ora bunch of candy ass SOB's that hang around HQ all day? Do you poeople want police officers who have the balls to move toward incidents that Joe citizen runs from or what? You citizens better decide if you want a bunch of PR bureaucratic candy asses or real police officers. If you don't support you REAL police officers you may as well call your sister or your grand pop to handle the situation. Support your police of call a damn social worker. Decide what you want! This is to the 80's IA supervisor....listen up cupcake,

I've been here 22+ yrs myself....it's a much different place than it was when I 1st came here to work.

Back in the day when you worked for DKPD things were alot different. IA didn't have to investigate every time an officer made and arrest and the perp got his hair out of place. This place has become so ridiculous that it's almost to the point if you put your hands on a perp just to restrain them there is a use of force report generated. This report is sent to IA and after a few of those ....well then you become flagged...regardless of circumstances and regardless if it was justified.

So why don't you shut your pie hole since you obviously have no idea what you're talking about or what officers have to deal with on a daily basis...it's not Mayberry RFD, and Aunt Bee ain't cookin dinner for ya...so go back into retirement.

THANKS CHIEF...OWE YOU ONE SWEETHEART....FOR HANGING US OUT TO DRY....

Some people have ulterior motives when they start this job, other's fall prey to the "easy money",and unlimited opportunities to take advantage of situations. This is not a profession for people of questional intregrity,border-line honesty,or little or no personal ethics. Unfortunately, some, not many, but some, slip through the cracks, and are eventually detected.(some--never)! No personal honor = big,big problems! You probably think,"all that happened a long, long time ago"! Not true. This last bunch of "perp's" intended to kill any or all officer's that stumbled across their drug/protection criminal activity!!! Unfortunately, because of these "turn your head",forced hirings by the fed govt, you will probably see annual polygraph/voice stress test's required for all "sworn personnel".(just like a requirement in narcotic's). Sad, but true. This does not have any thing to do with race, gender,or sexual preference. This blame falls on "those people" who should have never been hired, to begin with. REMEMBER,WHEN YOU LOWER THE STANDARDS IN THIS PROFESSION,YOU INVITE THE DEVIL INTO YOUR HOUSE!!!

what I meant by 'scrutiny' was, the media, the rabble, etc., -- not for misconduct or behavioral problems...I just meant "in general" as far as cameras being everywhere and officers worried over who's trying to say they are doing the wrong thing...I wasn't referring to criminal behavior!

Nothing wrong with the movie poster and if I recall correctly the "bad" cop in the movie got what he deserved. Throughout my career I have had 'Full Metal Jacket' and 'Sharky's Machine' posters in my office. Does not change how I do my job. The focus should be on departments such as Dekalb PD, Atlanta PD, Fulton Co (fill in the blank) and other metro Atlanta agencies filling positions with unqualified personnel. Basically thugs with badges. Got to raise the standards and not bow down to political correctness when it comes time to discipline those that make us all look bad. Officers are leaving these departments in masses to get away from the thug culture and corruption which is rampant in the urban areas. Changes need to be made!
