To all police and fire I want to thank you for all your sacrifices both on and off the job. I know it is not easy doing what you do and i know you make sacrifices both at home and at work. i know your families make sacrifices as well. I thank you for being here and doing what you do day in and day out. you deserve so much more than what you get both from the community and your leaders. I want you to know I appreciate all you do and to tell you I am thankful for you.

In the hiring process and in the police academy it was pounded in your head that only the best and highest qualified people are selected to be Dekalb police officers. You are told you will be held to a higher standard than others. You will be honest, loyal and have high standards and morals. You are told if you lie, cheat or steal or act unprofessionally you will be fired.
So can someone please tell me why our command staff, our public safety director our ceo and our commissioners can do all these things on a daily basis and none of them are held accountable.

sounds like we have some jealous weak officers

I grew up in a country Christian home, by an army veteran and a school teacher, I am the grandson of a ww2 veteran and I am a third-generation veteran and law enforcement officer. I was taught to take pride in myself and my country. I watched my father and grand-father serve their country and their community as soldiers and police officers. I too have chosen to serve my country and my community, the decision to work for Dekalb county was easy they had a reputation of being the best police agency in the state and known for good pay and benefits. I decided I would make this the place I would retire from. I take pride in not complaining and trying to set an example both to my colleagues and to the community that I work for and try to keep safe. I have shown up for work and have given 100% for over 20 years to this department. I have made sacrifices physically and emotionally for this department. I have missed birthdays and holidays with my family and kids to be here to do my job. I was told I would reach top out pay in 10 years and I am nowhere close to that, so I make more sacrifices and work part time jobs to support my family and give them the best I can. I come to work very tired at times and very sad because I wish I could provide more for my family. I do get frustrated at the county for lying to me and treating me so poorly. I have seen friends promoted and change with the rank they receive, I cannot trade my self-respect and Morales for some rank. I must look at the man in the mirror and be able to know I have not traded my integrity for rank or a special position. Even though I have been treated so poorly and lied to and things are only getting worse I will continue to come to work and give 100% because that is the oath I took, and I will serve my community just as I did my country. I know no one cares about the police officers here but if I could give anyone some advice I would tell them to never work for this police department because it will suck the life out of you and treat you worse than the criminals we are fighting on the streets.

Unfortunately Dekalb Co Govt views LE as a necessary evil as do most liberal, democrat run cities. They don't care how many calls you have to go to without backup, proper equipment, or relevant leadership. Your shoes will be filled with another naive idealist in their eyes so it's no loss to the corrupt "leaders" of Dekalb. Until tragedy strikes and shines light on their gross incompetence nothing will change. They are no different than the thugs you have to force into compliance on a daily basis.

Well it’s that time of year again when all Dekalb County Officers must take more time away from their families and work some more extra jobs to provide a decent Christmas for their families. Instead of the county paying the officers what they should be paid or given them better benefits they will have to work harder and longer to provide a good Christmas.
It is also that time of year where all the divisions in the Department have a so-called Christmas party in which the officers sit around wishing they were not here. The command staff will show up and praise them for all the hard work they put in and tell them they are appreciated, and they have the full support of the command staff and if we need anything to please let them know. It is really stomach turning how these men and women actually believe the garbage they are telling the troops. They only care about themselves and try to justify their cush position and whose ass to kiss next to keep the rank or position they have. Here is a good suggestion how about the command staff go to a commission meeting and demand a legitimate raise for the officers. Or at least demand to pay the officers based upon the PayScale they adopted last year. No we will never see that happen we will be threatened that we will be moved or transferred or if we don’t like it go to another department. I hope every officer who can leave will do so because Dekalb county police and its command staff and its county commissioners are lying, cheating backstabbing cowards.
To the officers in the trenches God Bless and be safe

So, let me get this straight, Dekalb police tells me the top pay for a patrol officer is 72000 and based on what I am hearing and reading if I come to work here I will never reach the top pay, no matter how many years I work for them. How can this be true if you are told this is a benefit of working for this police agency.

Anonymous said...

Yes, that is very true if you are thinking about working for this place please don’t do it, go to another agency who will pay you and treat you better. We have numerous officers who have been here 18 plus years and are not even close to the top out pay. They will never reach the top out pay either. See the commissioners know they have been here to long and will not leave so they will never do the right thing and make the pay right for the officers who have spent their lives devoted to this county. they simply do not give a shit about doing the right and ethical thing.

Maybe for Christmas we should buy the command staff and the commissioners all a bible, so they can read about how to treat their fellow man/women. Or maybe Amazon sells morals and character in a bottle we could give them.
Better yet I wish the Ceo, commissioners and the command staff a significant Merry Christmas just like the significant raise we received.

Dekalb is a joke and it will never change, not just the police department but the entire county. it is run by crooks and liars who only try to do things that benefit themselves. As for the police department the troops need to come together with the right agenda and make a strong and powerful statement that they will not stand for the disrespect and the bad pay and bad benefits that they are offered.

If you're not going to enforce traffic law on I-285 or I-20 do you mind returning DOT funding to the State Patrol or other LE agency that will actually enforce law and save lives from these lunatic drivers?
Thanks in advance.

While your'e there would you mind stopping at Cov Hwy, Wesley Chapel area and stop any of the numerous dirt bike riders blowing through traffic lights, on wrong side of street, speeding, without ins, on & on & on & on🙄.

Anonymous said...

We would love to stop all the illegal dirt bikes and four wheelers riding on the roadway and highways, but we have been told if you try to stop them and they refuse to stop just let them go because it is too dangerous to the public to chase them. See the police department is scared of the liability issues and scared of what the media will say about us chasing a reckless motorcycle rider. So it is better to just let them do whatever they want. I feel your pain how do you think we as officers feel knowing we can not do our job or enforce the laws because the county is scared to stand by us and support us.

Anonymous said...

If the police are not being paid well and the benefits suck and the department will not stand by them and let them do their jobs, then why in the heck would anyone ever want to be a police officer.

Anonymous said...

The police need our public support and need us to tell the county to pay them what the other agencies are being paid and to give them better benefits.

Anonymous said...

Does anyone know why the county decided not to do the second pay increase on the pay scale or study the implemented.what was the reason for not following through with it.

Anonymous said...

Is it really true that the command staff received a pay parody raise.

Anonymous said...

I have figured it out after each rank promotion you have to give up a small portion of your soul and character so by the time you reach command positions you are a puppet on a string with no spine.

Anonymous said...

I never see Dekalb police on I-285 unless it is an accident.. How can we get some officers stopping the speeders and reckless drivers on 285.

Anonymous said...

It’s no wonder new business won’t come into Dekalb when it looks like a lawless third world country.

Regarding selective enforcement of illegal dirt bike riders the State Patrol along with APD recently took initiate to combat them via aerial support and made numerous arrests. The majority were felonious arrests with illegal guns which as you should know prevents future victims of robberies, shootings, etc. Think outside the box command staff and get it done. The public and fellow officers are depending on you. IT'S YOUR JOB!

As for the illegal motorcycles off road vehicles and the chaos and crime they cause, please understand I along with every patrol officer in Dekalb county are in complete agreeance with you and your concerns. The problem is the supervisors and command staff have made it very clear that we will not chase or give pursuit to these vehicles because of the risk to the public. If we disregard a direct order, then we are written up and suspended without pay for a day or two. In case you have not been reading the other comments, we are very underpaid, and it is very hard to provide for our families, so we cannot risk losing money or taking the money from our families. Atlanta police, GSP , COBB and GWINNETT all have received 20 to 30% pay raise in the last six months. Dekalb commissioners gave themselves a 60% pay raise this year and they gave the police a 4% pay raise.
This is not about money it is about doing what is right for the citizens of Dekalb county and keeping them safe, we would love to do that, but our leaders have limited us to what we can do. I personally will not risk losing money for my family because I do not have it to spare. I wish our leaders had your attitude and our officers thank you for the support and we feel the same way you do.

The AJC posted an article about Dekalb Police and Fire wanting to hire 140 people to fill vacant positions. I hope no one applies for the job, everything they tell you about the benefits and pay is all a lie. You will never get raises or reach top out pay and the retirement and benefits are the worse . This place will just suck the life out of you and never treat you or pay you. If you are thinking about applying for a job here go find a veteran who has been here for 18 years or more and ask them if they have been treated or paid what they were promised. The answer is no they have not.

Anonymous said...

Why doesn’t the media look into the failure to pay officers what they were told and can’t someone do an open records request on the pay parody raise for the command staff.

Anonymous said...

Agreed regarding command staff’s incompetence. If you are unable to enforce law then simply step aside and let a more capable person handle it.

Just follow APD as usual. https://www.cbs46.com/news/apd-gsp-team-together-arrest-to-address-issues-with-atvs/article_f561c9e6-270f-5d13-b70a-e3d2f79cb2a8.html

Dekalb County Police hiring now,
What a joke, if you are thinking about applying please do not do this.
Dekalb County will Lie, CheT and Steal from you.
They will lie about your benefits and pay, you will never reach the top out pay and your benefits will cost you a fortune.
They will cheat you out of your retirement because they will not pay you what you were told.
They will steal your life from you and your family, because you will not be paid fairly you have to work overtime and lots of extra jobs, and your family will never see you. They steal your life and when you have been here 15 plus years they know you are stuck and can’t go anywhere else.
Do Not Come to work here

Hands down the most racist, personal agenda driven place I've ever worked. Good luck, you're gonna need it.

And don’t forget so corrupt it would make New Orleans PD blush.

M. Miller you complain so much on here. How can you justify your salary when all you do is impound abandoned vehicles on the interstate when your territory partners are getting slammed. If you are still angry about getting demoted then go somewhere else. Your attitude is toxic to the brand new officers on day watch.
