Watch Where You Eat Boys and Girls

Everyone is so busy answering 911 calls, who has time to eat, much less eat with one (1) or more peers even.

Oh; that's right, how silly of us. Must be some of Gerry's kids: ICP

Meal Break

Thats why you hide your units around corners....duh!

Crap like this is why I got out of the navy in 82, chicken-shit or mickey-mouse regulations like this do not instill confidence in command. I have been noticing a lot command types in the elevators who do not look like they command them-selves out of a wet-papersack, much less command anyone else. I notice Chief O'Briens name is not on the memo, I doubt if he would of approved this if he saw it.

it's interesting how it is directed towards uniform. I guess rancid's unit can still do whatever they want.

what is a "role call".....

Meal breaks? I haven't been on a team where we had formal meal breaks.

Wouldn't you love to see the look on the SGT's face when he/she pulls up a group status and sees you out of service on a "meal break".

I was always told we don't have meal breaks. You catch something on the run.

HOW NOW BROWN COW. This is nothing new stop your damn whining and finish your dinner in your nice new, clean, smell nice units!

Ohh wait thats ICP units, well anyway finish your meals in your old, crusty, dried vomit, urine, feces, blood stained bio hazard units.

I agree with the memo. We don't need any more bad press than wwe already get. This is a good idea guy's and good management. Supervisors should enforce it. No, this is not Chief Horner or anyone that even knows him.

Anonymous said...

I think Chief O'Brien would infact approve it. put some thought into it. It is only good management and police.

This has been the policy for as long as I can remember. Don't be whiny. It takes away from your credibility!

What about 2 officers and a commander? Would you believe 2 officers and a detective? How about 2 officers and a non-badge carrying department employee? What if it's 2 officers and 1 off duty?

Does a meal break include a cup of coffee? What if a citizen separately invites 3 officers to discuss crime reports over a BLT at Waffle House - should the officers draw straws to see who has to leave? What if a patrol with 2 officers respond to a call at McDonald's where another officer is already lunching?

Lord help us ... if we don't trust our officers to decide where and with whom to break bread, what on earth are we doing issuing firearms and such?

This has been in place for 15 years or more. I am sure someone got complained on.

Anonymous said...

Fist of all, it is Roll Call Jerry, not Role Call. Please have a Sergeant check your work before you send it out. Wasn’t this guy a Captain before he made Major? And second of all, the only people who complain about this are the Majors and the Chiefs. 98% of the citizens do not give a damn if three police officers eat lunch or dinner. I am sure they know that police officers are human beings and they eat just like everybody else.

We have police officers having sex with underage girls. We have police officers stealing on camera. We have enormous morale problems. The police chief was fired and he has yet to have his appeal hearing. We have a command staff who couldn’t lead a Girl Scout troop. We do not have enough police cars. Our CAD system and radio system are both horrible.

And we are worrying about three officers eating lunch together??????????????

Anonymous said...

So what if three or four officers are eating together? I'd love to ask the citizen complaining up such a sight, "Do you get to eat at your job? Why shouldn't these officers get a meal break? Don't you have anything better to do than complain about people eating?"

Now that Bolton is gone, is this what we are reduced to? This has been policy for a long time and it is an issue of professionalism. Regardless of whether you care or not, part of our job is to project a certain image to the public.

I hate sitting around with several officers anyway because someone will usually get loud or start cursing within earshot of the public.

You may not care but some still do. Can't believe I just defended Horner, but he was just doing what he was told. The order for this memo came from higher.

(Southside needs to learn to carpool).

A lot of bonding occurs over meals and the talk between the troops. When I was navy the only major entertainment or dining rule was don't park the official vehicle in front of whore house. Things have changed, we have Bolton driving around in his confiscated Mercedes. We have previous a CEO that was very smart but had serious personality issues that has lead to serious operational problems in the field. Under the current rules I reccomend a section/departmental luncheon every three months, A lot of good things happens when you throw throw the troops together to talk among themselves. Work it out with regs and bosses and I guarentee better efficiency between yourselves if you do a luncheon. Park your vehicles behind the block or make a public announcement of the event, (actually thats a poor idea) P/S needs to "jell" back togather. Good luck guys!

Where was Horner when Bolton was violating all the policies. Where was Horner when the abuse Vernon Jones was a part of. I do agree if a lot of police cars are at one location, the public already knows are department has been crying about man power, so the right thing to do is follow the rules in place. Dont make waves on little stuff, just do whats right. Most of the command staff are not respected by the officers, that is why you get the negative comments. Totally understandable. Uniform Rocks and are the backbone in Law Enforcement. Thanks Uniform keep your heads up and be safe.

How many police units were parked out front a few months ago when Rancifer took all Special Ops supervisors out to lunch? Hmmmmmmmmmmm!! Its nice to point to the policy when its serves the command staff's self-serving purpose. Doesnt our policy say we shouldnt accept gratuity? Hell, the Cofer brothers donated an entire precinct (Tucker) to this department. Do you think the Cofer brothers would ever get a citation in this county? Hell no!

Professional Image; anyone know what it means? If not you should be working at McDonalds flipping burgers...They allow everyone to eat at the same time, and ask the customers to wait on themselves..NOT...Come on people what if you were running a company and paying your workers..Would you want all of them going to eat at the same time. No one answering the phone, no one manning the shop? Image is everything, that's why supervisors ask you to come to work looking sharp. Not like you just pulled your shirt out of a pile on the floor. If you don't have self resepect how do you expect the perp to do anything but laugh at you when you roll up on the scene. Look in the mirror before you report for duty. Get in shape your life may depend on it. Don't give the public the idea that we have soooo many units, we can afford to have 3 and 4 officer off the road eating together...Oh yea who is backing the one Officer that is still on the road? If you can't see the since in this rule, then please do us real Officers a favor and go work somewhere else..You are a liability to me and the department. Thanks for listening! A Sgt. and yes I will write you up! You can eat with your buddies on your suspension day! Maybe they will treat since you not being payed for that day.

I agree that 98% of citizens don't care how many officers eat together but like everything else its the 2% that have nothing to do in there worthless lives to do but complain. I know its policy but its a dumb one. there is this thing called morale it would build some if you could break bread with the men and women who watched your back. because I know that from my experience when a hot call came out the ones that broke this rule where the ones that left half eatin meals sittin on the tables to get there. its a dumb rule and the bosses really need to instead of send this stupid memos. they need to change it. and for the ones that say its just officers crying. its a morale killer to see these memos.

Professional image? You're kidding me right.

We did away with professional image when we went on a hiring binge that brought us gang signs at graduation.

We have officers breaking the "little rules" all the time and supervisors that think its okay because its a perk that goes with the job.

Why all the sudden does Klink feel the need to follow up the "Attendance Required for ALS Hearings in DOWNTOWN Atlanta" with this piece of garbage.

Some lead with subtle nudges....other tweek their subordinates noses in order to show their "leadership" and to satisfy their desire to flash power.

This memo does nothing but rehash an old, common sense policy. The problem with the memo is that in the current environment, officers view it as hen pecking by a white shirt who drives a pimped out county vehicle.

You guys and girls crack me up. It's always something. SERIOUSLY?? Will you ever be happy? Lets review. You hated the CEO. Now you have a new one who is first the most part making good decisions. You hated the chief. The new CEO fired him. You have a new temp. Chief in place..who has been part of the Dekalb family forever i might add...and he is making good decisions. SO you have some bad apples. OK...there are perps in every workplace. Get over with. The county may not do anything about it but one day they will meet their maker. Does ANY OF THIS stuff...where you eat, how many people you eat with, who is having sex with who, who is stealing what...does ANY OF THIS effect your pay??? NO!!

Move on. STOP crying!! Do your job. Do what you have control over. Do you know why cops die so soon after retirement?? Because the stress level stays at max for so many years over BS. When you retire you crash. The job is stressful enough as it is. Why worry about petty crap.
To be honest with you I am in total aggreement with the new "petty" order. Having a bunch of officers sitting down to eat together is not professional. It does not look good. If you want down time to visit, do it behind a building somewhere. Its a meal for the love of god. Grab it and go. Who has time to eat anyway. This is the profession that YOU CHOSE. Now, for as long as you wear that uniform, you will be in a fish bowl. It is what it is. We don't work in a department store. We are not corporate office workers. WE ARE POLICE OFFICERS. ACT LIKE IT! We do things such as fight bad guys, chase bad guys, save lives, help people in need, and hunt for people preying on society.
STOP COMPLAINING ABOUT EVERY THING...EVERYTHING!! I wish one day I could log on here and read someone saying "Today is a good day. I am alive and well. I am a police officer. I am proud of where I am and what I do. I am proud to be part of the biggest gang in the world."

Anonymous said...

Let me tell you that the citizens do notice when a bunch of officers are at the same place eating. I notice. It looks bad and it is inefficient. You guys are ruining your credidabily by bitching about small crap like this. Don't sweat the samll stuff like this. Knock it off and act like men ! You sound like a bunch of wusses on this !

Just the fact that this simple reminder to maintain a professional image sparked such passion all around is revealing in itself. So, call it complaining or call it a cry for esprit d'corps - this seems to be a punching bag for bigger frustrations.

As for public impressions, I can only speak for myself. Before the OHOP was razed on Peachtree, I would often see a couple of officers meeting up there for lunch; sometimes SWAT. The only thought I had was how great it was to see these folks bonding over a meal and interacting with the locals. For me, that is a public image I'd be happy to see anytime.

The job is tough enough because of real problems. I respectfully don't see this as one worth command's time unless there is a chronic problem affecting performance.

We are all weiners! There is much wrong with the county, and if we don't expose it, we will never fix it. From what I understand, half of DKPD considers this blog to be a bunch of whiners. So be it, I will continue to publish problems that I see and hope the rest of you guys will chip in. The issue of this thread is really "chicken-shit" and should be commen sense, don't park in front of the Krispy-creme or the strip-clubs in masses guys. Be safe, and keep us safe! We appreciate all you do!

I don't care if 3 + officers eat together. What's the difference if they eat together as opposed to all eating at separate restaurants?
They're either on meal break or not. If they are, let them eat where they want with who they want.

Like someone said above, how do you know whether some/all are off duty?

I think there's bigger fish for upper management to address.

Most officers dont have a problem with the policy, we have a problem with the tone of the memo. We dont need Horner to tell us in the memo that officers who violate this policy is subject to disciplinary action. We are already aware of that! You people in power just dont get it, do you? You guys continue to run this place the same way Bolton ran it - with threats and intimidation. If we respected your leadership you wouldnt have to threaten us! Your memos dont have to end with threats. How about ending it with, 'thanks for all of your efforts. Be safe!' Just like verbal judo, its all about how you talk to and show respect for other human beings.

Does the memo apply to CID? They eat in groups all the time, and they should break bread together. Often times several morning watch guys will 59 after work and eat breakfast, and share a joke or two together. Should they then take off their uniforms? We dont want John Q citizen to think all 5 officers are working. One more thought, if Horner is so interested in enforcing these minor policies why won't he make that female lieutenant at his own precinct wear her bullet proof vest, per departmental policy? That is a major infraction that Im sure I'd get written up for. What about the captain and lts that smoke in uniform on the precinct lot, where they can clearly be seen by passing citizens? Is this not a violation of 'professional image?' What about the command vehicles with the illegal window tint, in violation of state law?You see Horner, we can play this game all day long!

Slamin Ethel....I just read your comment...and I "know who you are"....you the one that been driving my car...(but then again, maybe not..since you didn't mention the 4,482 scab peelings in the back seat)

Ya get it right. Are you sure it was DKPD eating together to start with? I mean, c'mon...when the officers are sitting down, you can only see the uniform from the waist up - right? That's security. Police Officers would never wear those nasty, drab, worn-out gray, downtrodden, faded, musty, depressing rat-colored pukey colored shirts - would they? I mean - they are "Men in Blue" - right? (or even an all black uniform). Ut-Oh, I done went and dug up another can of worms. But talking about a change in morale....give the officers some "BLUE" uniform shirts and I guarantee you that you will see a change in morale. Honestly, who wants to be "Men in Gray"? C'mon, lets have a poll.

Anonymous said...

Point is well taken and correct, it looks bad when several officers are out eating together at one location. Because citizens do not understand why several officers could be at one restaurant eating at the time. Its not like Matthews where every officer comes to eat. So don't let this rule make you mad. Just try and understand what it means.

This guy is a deputy chief? I remember when he use to hurt himself chasing phantom perps.

Anonymous said...

Bottom line is address the issue with the offenders instead of insulting and punishing everyone with your rediculous memos as usual.

there are more officers that do not agree with the memo than there are that do agree with it; i gaurantee that. either way, it's a policy that is here to stay, but feel free to continue bitching about it. i, personally, do not agree with the policy either, but there is no use bitching about it. they are not going to change it. as long as it does not affect my pay, i will not give my $0.02.
