"It Is Really Becoming Hard To Justify Remaining In DeKalb."

From the blog "South DeKalb. Click here for more.
The tax man cometh, and he wants to raise your taxes. I think by now most DeKalb homeowners know they are about to see their taxes go up. We knew this was coming, and the commission knew it was coming, but I guess they wanted to play the roles of friend to the homeowner when it comes election time. CEO Elllis knew it had to be dome, but he just didn’t ask for enough of a millage increase. So here we are about to get pinged with higher property taxes. The possibility of an additional penny for transportation ( got something about that coming too) a job and housing market that is anemic at best, and county services that are just as anemic. It is really becoming hard to justify remaining in DeKalb. The grass may not be greener on the other side, but at least it ain’t brown like we have in DeKalb.

And don't forget the School Board is also going to be asking for a millage increase as well as a sales tax increase. I will vote NO until they clean up the system, get rid of the bloat at the Palace and start putting students, teachers and taxpayers their top priorty instead of their personal agenda. Any tax I have the right to vote on will get a NO until bloat, etc. is done away with.

DeKalb population grew 43,000 from 2000 to 2010 (U.S Census). Population in South DeKalb decreased (two GA legislative seats to be lost). But Count employees went from about 5500 to 7500 during that time. Also, the incorporated cities like Dunwoody took over some of the County functions that should have reduced the county employee count. Excluding public safety, the rest of the County is run as a job bank. Bloat is the current culture.

The County cannot afford to give a raise to anyone, except CEO and BOC staff members.

BECOMING...? I think it BECAME some time ago. Obsessing over the grave of this county is NOT productive. MOVE ON...

Actually most DeKalb homeowners are not going to see the amount they pay in property taxes go up. But I wouldn't expect most residents of DeKalb to understand that. And no, I'm not defending Ellis or the BOC.

Most DeKalb homeowners have seen the county assessed values of their homes drop a lot over the past few years, especially this year. Many homeowners in central and south DeKalb have homes that according to the county are worth half of what they were worth a few years ago. Some of these homes lost half their value in just the past year. These owners WILL NOT be paying more in property taxes because of the incredible drop in assessed value. In fact, many homeowners will be paying much less.

The homeowners that will be paying more, mostly in north DeKalb, are truly the only ones who can complain about a tax increase. Many of their homes have not lost value, because they truly have retained their value or the county decided to stick them with a greater share of the tax burden.

So all these idiots who go on the news and rant on message boards about how their home is worth less than half of what it was a year ago AND they don't want to pay higher taxes don't know what the heck they're talking about. Complain about spending sure. The county does need to restructure. But don't complain about paying higher taxes when you actually will pay less.
